“Whenever it was someone’s birthday, we knew we were in for a treat because our mother would whip out her well-used Better Homes and Gardens cookbook and make this”

This Chocolate Satin Frosting lives up to its name, delivering a beautifully smooth, incredibly rich, and glossy chocolate finish to any dessert. Made with unsweetened chocolate and a unique chilling technique, it achieves a luxurious consistency that’s perfect for spreading.

Ingredients:

Ingredient Quantity
Unsweetened baking chocolate 3 1/2 ounces
Powdered sugar 3 cups
Hot water 4 1/2 tablespoons
Large egg, room temperature 1
Unsalted butter, room temperature 1/2 cup
Vanilla extract 1 1/2 teaspoons

Instructions:

  1. Melt Chocolate: In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the 3 1/2 ounces of unsweetened baking chocolate. Do this in 30-second intervals, stirring after each interval, until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth.
  2. Combine Ingredients: To the melted chocolate, add the 3 cups of powdered sugar and 4 1/2 tablespoons of hot water. Beat in the 1 large room temperature egg, 1/2 cup room temperature unsalted butter, and 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract. Mix with an electric mixer until the frosting is smooth and lump-free. At this point, the frosting will likely be quite thin.
  3. Chill & Whip to Thicken: Get a larger bowl and fill it with ice and a bit of cold water to create an ice bath. Place the bowl of frosting directly into the larger bowl with the ice water (making sure no water gets into the frosting). Using an electric mixer, whip the frosting continuously while it’s in the ice bath. Continue whipping until the frosting thickens to a spreadable, satin-like consistency. This can take several minutes.
  4. Frost & Enjoy: Once thickened, remove the frosting bowl from the ice bath. Use it immediately to frost your “Feathery Fudge Cake” or any cake of your choosing.

Enjoy your decadent Chocolate Satin Frosting!
