Val Kilmer’s last ever Instagram posts as daughter confirms cause of death

The world mourns the passing of acclaimed actor Val Kilmer, known for his iconic roles in films that defined a generation. Kilmer, who starred in classics like “Top Gun,” “True Romance,” “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,” and “The Doors,” where he portrayed the legendary Jim Morrison, has died at the age of 65.
According to a statement from his daughter, Kilmer passed away on Tuesday in Los Angeles due to complications from pneumonia. This sad news follows his well-documented battle with throat cancer, a diagnosis he received in 2014. The subsequent tracheotomy surgery significantly impacted his voice and, consequently, his acting career.

In his candid 2020 memoir, “I’m Your Huckleberry,” and the Amazon Prime documentary “Val,” Kilmer shared intimate details of his cancer journey, the rigorous treatments he underwent, and the lasting effects on his vocal cords. “I obviously am sounding much worse than I feel,” Kilmer revealed in the documentary. “I can’t speak without plugging this hole (in his throat). You have to make the choice to breathe or to eat. It’s an obstacle that is very present with whoever sees me.”
His final on-screen appearance was a poignant cameo in the 2022 blockbuster sequel, “Top Gun: Maverick.” During filming, advanced AI technology was used to help recreate his voice, allowing him to reprise his role as Iceman. Reflecting on their reunion, actor Tom Cruise shared with Jimmy Kimmel in 2023, “I just want to say that was pretty emotional. I’ve known Val for decades, and for him to come back and play that character… he’s such a powerful actor that he instantly became that character again.”

Kilmer’s final Instagram posts offered glimpses into his artistic side. One post featured a painting accompanied by the caption, “It’s got that late-night glow. Cool tones with a low burn, like when the camp fire cools down but you’re still wide awake.” Another, posted on February 23, 2025, showed him alongside artist David Choe, with the caption “It’s been a while,” posing in front of a painting featuring Batman and a mask of the hero.
Tributes from fellow actors and filmmakers poured in, highlighting Kilmer’s immense talent and impact on the film industry. “While working with Val on Heat I always marvelled at the range, the brilliant variability within the powerful current of Val’s possessing and expressing character,” said “Heat” director Michael Mann.

“See ya, pal. I’m going to miss you,” US actor Josh Brolin wrote alongside a picture of himself and Kilmer on Instagram. “You were a smart, challenging, brave, uber-creative firecracker. There’s not a lot left of those,” he added. “I hope to see you up there in the heavens when I eventually get there. Until then, amazing memories, lovely thoughts.”
Kilmer’s fans also shared their heartfelt memories and condolences.
He was married to actress Joanne Whalley from 1988 to 1996, and they had two children together. They met during the filming of “Willow.”
Val Kilmer’s legacy will live on through his memorable performances and the impact he had on those who knew him. May he rest in peace.
