White Sugar 2 tbsp
Egg Yolks 2
Milk ½ cup
Salt ½ tsp
Shortening 1 cup
Egg Whites 2
Apples (peeled, cored, and sliced) 9
White Sugar ¾ cup
Ground Cinnamon ½ tsp
Confectioners’ Sugar 1 ½ cups
Salt Pinch
Vanilla Extract 1 tsp
Milk 3 tbsp

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and grease and flour a 9×13 inch pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, stir together the all-purpose flour, 2 tbsp of white sugar, and ½ tsp of salt. Cut in the shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Combine the egg yolks and ½ cup of milk, then stir this mixture into the flour mixture.
  4. Roll out half of the dough on a lightly floured surface to match the size of the prepared pan. Line the inside of the pan with this dough, and spread a light coating of egg white over it.
  5. Fill the crust with the sliced apples, and sprinkle ¾ cup of white sugar and ½ tsp of ground cinnamon on top.
  6. Roll out the remaining dough and place it on top of the apples. Brush the top with a light coating of egg white.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes, or until the crust is golden.
  8. While the bars are cooling, beat together 1 ½ cups of confectioners’ sugar, a pinch of salt, 1 tsp of vanilla extract, and 3 tbsp of milk until the mixture is smooth.
  9. Drizzle this glaze over the cooled bars, and then cut them into squares.
